New research indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
